The HIV/AIDS Twinning Center creates, funds, and manages twinning partnerships and other initiatives in developing and transitioning nations countries that receive support from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
Currently, the Twinning Center operates in 12 countries, 11 of which are situated in sub-Saharan Africa. Below is a list of our current and past projects.

Media Institute of Southern Africa - Gaborone / Zambia Institute of Mass Communication
(2007 - Present)
This south-south partnership is working to improve the quality and scope of HIV/AIDS-related information available through the mass media by providing targeted training to journalists and editors in Botswana.

Marang Childcare Network / The Children's Place Association
(2008 - Present)
With the goal of improving community-based support services available to orphans and vulnerable children in Botswana, this partnership focuses on building the institutional capacity of Marang and its constituent organizations that provide OVC care.

Botswana Institute of Health Sciences / African Palliative Care Association
(2007 - Present)
This south-south partnership is strengthening the Institute's capacity to provide pre- and in-service training on palliative care and helping integrate palliative care concepts into existing pharmacy technology, health education, and dental therapy programs.

This south-south partnership is strengthening Tebelepole's institutional capacity with the goal of improving voluntary counseling and testing services, prevention and outreach programs, and quality assurance capabilities.

Hope Worldwide / African Palliative Care Association

This south-south partnership is advocating for increased availability to appropriate palliative care medicines and working to improve the overall provision of palliative care services available in Cote d'Ivoire.

PCD-CI / Liverpool VCT
(2007 - 2010)
This south-south partnership linked PCD-CI, a technical working group of three voluntary counseling and testing sites in Cote d'Ivoire, with Kenya-based Liverpool VCT. Partners worked together to scale-up existing services and bolster PCD-CI's capacity to train additional workers to provide high quality prevention, counseling, and testing services.

This partnership is working to support pharmaceutical and laboratory institutions through the development and expansion of a national telephone consultation service or "warmline" that offers information and advice to healthcare professionals working in HIV/AIDS care.

This innovative initiative is helping build institutional capacity to combat HIV/AIDS by recruiting health and allied professionals from the Ethiopian Diaspora for long-term volunteer placements at PEPFAR-supported organizations throughout Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa University School of Pharmacy / Howard University Pharmacist and Continuing Education Center

Pharmacists play a key role in HIV/AIDS clinical care, so this university-to-university partnership is working to strengthen AAU's capacity to provide high quality pre-service and in-service training to support ART scale up throughout Ethiopia.

Partners are collaborating to improve hospital services - including treatment, care, and psycho-social support - for PLWH in Debre Berhan's catchment area. They are also working to increase patient involvement as a means to improve quality of care and better ensure adherence to ARV treatment.

Members of this hospital-to-hospital partnership are working to improve the quality of HIV/AIDS care by developing both human resource and organizational capacity at Ambo. Key objectives include establishing an infection control program and strengthening coordination of care services to improve patient retention.

Partners are working together to build critical institutional and human resource capacity in the field of adult and pediatric emergency medicine at Black Lion Hospital, where the majority of urgent care patients present with internal medical emergencies related to HIV/AIDS, as well as at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital.

ANEMO now participates in a second Twinning Center partnership with St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing at Moravian College (see below).

Partners implemented "prevention with positives" programs in two distinct community-based settings: a healthcare clinic and a VCT and peer support center. They also expanded these successful prevention services to Mozambique's Sofala and Zambezia provinces.

Partners are developing and implementing a four-year degree program in medical technology at PON, as well as in-service continuing education programs for biomedical scientists. Medical technologists play a critical role in the delivery of ART and the diagnosis of HIV and related opportunisitic infections.

Brits Hospital / Foundation for Professional Development
(2005 - 2007)
This south-south partnership, which graduated in September 2007, focused on improving ART and related services at Brits Hospital HIV/AIDS Clinic and its affiliated referral sites. The partnership initiated ART for 1,831 patients; expanded VCT services to four referral sites; and greatly improved care and support services for PLWH in South Africa's North West Province.

Foundation for Professional Development / University of California - San Francisco School of Nursing

Partners worked to strengthen FPD's training capacity to improve HIV-related care and services at the clinics it supports, as well as to develop a cadre of nurse leaders who can serve as technical experts and mentors for implementing a new HIV Nurse Case Management Model.

University of the Free State, Centre for Health Systems Research and Development / State University of New York Downstate Medical Center

Partners worked to strengthen the Centre's ability to collect, analyze, and report scientific data on HIV and TB infections in South Africa's Free State. Once disseminated, this research will inform policy and practices in the province and throughout the country.

Based on the organizational capacity developed through their partnership with SUNY-Downstate, the Free State partners were awarded direct funding from CDC/South Africa to conduct a Public Health Evaluation designed to implement and evaluate interventions that increase uptake of HIV testing among TB patients in the Free State.

Volunteer Healthcare Corps - South Africa Preceptors Initiative
(2007 - 2010)
The VHC actively recruited infectious disease specialists and other clinical experts, as well as allied professionals, to provide onsite technical assistance in support of the country's ART scale up efforts. Although the South Africa Preceptor's Initiative officially concluded in 2010, volunteers are still being placed at partnership institutions as requested.

In support of Tanzania's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare's goal of expanding ART services at more than 200 care and treatment sites, the VHC actively recruited clinical experts to provide onsite technical assistance through this Initiative. Currently, AIHA's VHC supports the efforts of our institutional partnerships and programs by recruiting skilled volunteers to provide technical support and mentoring as requested.
